Education: Empowering Youth Through Character and Care

At Tzu Chi South Africa, we believe that education is about more than academic achievement; it is about raising empathetic human beings dedicated to serving their communities. Character education forms the foundation of all our educational initiatives. By planting the seeds of moral principles in both students and educators, we actively cultivate compassion, responsibility, and ethical leadership in the next generation.
To achieve this, we focus on removing the critical physical and environmental barriers that hinder a child’s ability to learn. This involves direct, practical interventions to address everyday challenges such as hunger, lack of electricity, and poor school infrastructure. Furthermore, to bridge the educational divide, our “New Sprout” tutoring programmes offer targeted academic support for less privileged students. These programs provide essential tutoring in Mathematics and English alongside practical life-skills training. By combining tangible support with moral development, we integrate core values into the learning process to help shape a more caring society and ensure students grow into well-rounded, self-reliant leaders.
Character Education
In South Africa, Tzu Chi’s Character Education program goes beyond academics to actively transform school environments. By introducing core values like compassion, respect, and environmental stewardship, volunteers help shift campus cultures in vulnerable communities from conflict to care. These teachings are highly action-oriented. For instance, students inspired by the program have saved coins in “Bamboo Banks” to fund and physically renovate their own neglected school grounds alongside volunteers. By turning moral principles into tangible community service, this holistic approach equips youth with the emotional resilience and civic responsibility needed to uplift themselves and their neighborhoods.
To bridge the educational divide in vulnerable communities, the “New Sprout” Tutor Program provides holistic academic support for students in grades 5 to 7. Held on weekends, the program offers dedicated Mathematics and English classes led by qualified local teachers and tutor assistants. Beyond core academics, volunteer coaches introduce vital life skills and team-building activities. By integrating these lessons with Tzu Chi’s character education, the program creates a nurturing environment where students not only improve their grades but also build the moral foundation and confidence needed to thrive.

School Partnerships
Tzu Chi South Africa actively partners with local schools to transform vulnerable educational environments into safe, nurturing spaces focused on both literacy and moral development. A flagship example of this initiative is the collaboration with Addington Primary School in Durban, where the foundation established Africa’s very first “Jing Si” Reading Space. This dedicated sanctuary goes beyond traditional academics by providing students with a peaceful environment and access to specialized character education books, including “Jing Si Aphorisms.” By integrating these resources with active, on-campus character development programs, Tzu Chi South Africa helps students overcome the emotional weight of their challenging surroundings, build resilience, and foster a lasting culture of respect, compassion, and kindness.
